Reusing content
Content reuse ensures consistency and speeds up updates of shared information.
Reuse content wherever possible and reasonable to ensures consistency of content, and to eliminates the need to modify several instances of the content when it later needs to be updated. Heretto provides an extensive system of reuse capabilities, including:
Reusing the same topic in different maps.
This useful when related products share the same information.
Reusing the same DITA element in different locations.
If you can assign an value to the element's ID attribute, you can reuse that element. Some examples include sections, tables, paragraphs, lists, list items and text spans like bold and phrase.
Variables for common terms and names.
All product names, and all features names that are likely to change over time should be defined in variables.
Content reuse guidelines
When reusing content, follow these guidelines:
See the Heretto documentation for detailed instructions on content reuse.
Put the source of the shared content in a folder named _Shared, and put that folder at the highest directory where it will be used, such as in the main folder for the product or shared features.
Best practice is to include "warehouse" in the filename. The name should also include the product of feature. For example, Import_warehouse.dita.
