TA Topics/Themes Emerging
The TA Topics/Themes Emerging module helps you see which topics or themes your customers are talking about more often in recent feedback. It also shows whether sentiment for those topics or themes is trending upward (more positive) or downward (less positive) against a selected benchmark (such as Previous Year, Previous Month, and so on).
This report is intended to analyze multiple topics or themes at once to reveal insights specific to a selected set of topics or themes. To this end, the module uses the Multi Theme Selector and Multi Topic Selector filters defined at the dashboard level. For more information about creating filters, see Filters and control panels.
For more information about configuring Text Analytics, see Implement Text Analytics.
This module displays information about either topics or themes, depending on your selection in the Text Analytics subjects to display property. If you want to see both topics and themes, create two separate modules.
You can make the module available as a table, a bubble chart, or both. For example, the following image shows a TA Topics/Themes Emerging module configured to show topics, and displayed as a table. Each row represents an emerging topic. Columns show the topic's effect size and whether sentiment for the topic is trending upward or downward. Hover over any topic to see more detailed data for that topic.
The following image shows a TA Topics/Themes Emerging module configured to show topics, and displayed as a bubble chart. The size of the bubbles represents the volume of each topic.
Metrics
Experience Cloud uses the following calculations for Text Analytics metrics in the TA Topics/Themes Emerging module.
For more information about scores used in Text Analytics, see Text Analytics metrics.
- Volume change (%)
-
The change in volume of records received for the configured time period as a percentage, calculated as:
- Volume change (#)
-
The change in volume of records received for the configured time period as a count, calculated as:
Note: When there is no historical data for the time period, a change in volume cannot be calculated. In that event the Volume Change column displays a NEW badge to indicate that the topic or theme is newly discussed. - Effect size
-
Describes how meaningful the difference in mentions between two time periods is. Uses a statistical approach that enables you to understand the practical significance of an increase or decrease in mentions. Calculated as:
- Point change
-
Measures the absolute difference in a percentage between two time periods to show how much a topic or theme's presence has increased or decreased over time, calculated as:
- Impact score - getting better or getting worse
-
These metrics are displayed to users as Impact Score Change. They reveal topics and themes with improved or degrading Impact Scores. Calculated as:
Note: Scores less than or equal to zero are not included in the calculation. - Impact on net sentiment - getting better or getting worse
-
These metrics are displayed to users as Impact on Net Sentiment Change. They reveal when the impact of a specific topic or theme on the net sentiment score is improving or degrading. Calculated as:
Note: Scores less than or equal to zero are not included in the calculation. - Sentiment trend

Co-occurrence metrics
When co-occurrence mode is enabled for a reporting module, metrics that measure topic-theme or topic-topic results instead measure co-occurrence results. This means that instead of comparing an individual topic or theme result to the set of filtered records, the topics and themes that tended to occur together ("co-occurrence results") are compared as a single unit to the set of filtered records.
There are two types of co-occurrence: "same record," which finds specified insights occurring in the same record, and "same phrase," which is more granular, as it finds specified insights occurring in the same phrase of the same record.
When using the TA Topics/Themes Emerging module in co-occurrence mode, both types of co-occurrence are supported, and the module metrics above are calculated in terms of co-occurrence results rather than a single topic or theme:
For more information, see Co-occurrence reporting metrics and TA Topics/Themes Co-Occurrence.
General settings properties
These properties define which roles can see the module, its size, and whether or not an icon appears for the module.
- Roles that can see this module
- Narrows the list of roles from those that can see the parent report. For example, while a report might be visible to three roles, you might want to limit visibility for a particular module in the report to one role.Important: If you grant visualization access to a report for a specific user in User that can see this report property, when selecting a role in Roles that can see this module property at module level, the specific user's permission is overridden.
- Module size
- Display size of the module.
- Module icon
- Optional icon to display next to the module title. To remove an icon, click Clear Selection at the top of the icon selector.
Data properties
These properties determine the type of data presented in the module, and whether or not that data is filtered.

- Text Analytics subjects to display
- Whether or not the module shows data for Text Analytics Topics or Themes.
- Topics/Themes options
- The specific Topics or Themes displayed in the module. Use either the Topics/Themes available in the Control panel, or select specific Topics/Themes. The choices you make are associated with the filters defined at the dashboard level.
When selecting specific Topics, set these properties:
-
Select text source — The category of topics. Optionally, click Select comment fields to select one or more fields in that category.
-
Select level — The level in the hierarchy of topics.
-
Select topics — One or more topics in the selected source categories.
-
Select speaker — The speaker of the analyzed text.
When selecting specific Themes, set these properties:
-
Select text source — The category of themes. Optionally, click Select comment fields to select one or more fields in that category.
-
Select language — The language of received comments.
-
Select level — The level in the hierarchy of themes.
-
Select speaker — The speaker of the analyzed text.
-
- Mentioned in
- Only appears when Display co-occurrence results is selected. Whether or not the co-occurring and Main insights are mentioned in the same phrase or record. If Topics options is configured to Use Topics/Themes on Control panel, this property is overridden by the user's selection on the Control panel.
- Score field
-
Only when the Show Distribution Based On property is set to Score. Determines the Score used as the source for respondent comments, which may be:
-
Use default for Score field — Makes the module dynamic to the score selected in the Control panel.
-
Select — Forces the module to show data only for the selected score field.
-
- Calculation
- Sets a specific calculation (such as NPS, Count, and so on) for processing the data.
In conjunction with the Show Score Based On property, this property determines the Impact Score calculation when the Display Topics/Themes By property is set to Impact Score - Getting Better or Impact Score - Getting Worse.
- Split Positive and Negative
- When the Display Topics/Themes By property is set to Volume (%), Volume (#), Point Change, Effect Size, Impact Score - Getting Better, or Impact on Net Sentiment - Getting Better, turn on Split Positive Negative to restrict data to rows with positive changes only. When the Display Topics/Themes By property is set to Impact Score - Getting Worse or Impact on Net Sentiment - Getting Worse, turn on Split Positive Negative to restrict data to rows with negative changes only.
- Benchmark
- Compares selected metrics against this Benchmark.
-
Note:
To apply benchmark configuration at module level, no benchmark control must be set to dashboard level.
- Number of Rows to Display
- The number of emerging topics or themes to display.
- Display Topics/Themes By
- Determines the sort order of the topics or themes, selected from Volume (%), Volume (#), Point Change, Effect Size, Impact Score - Getting Better, Impact Score - Getting Worse, Impact on Net Sentiment - Getting Better, and Impact on Net Sentiment - Getting Worse.
For more information about Impact Score, see Impact score. For more information about Net Sentiment, see Sentiment analysis.
- Time period
- Filters the module by the selected time period. Click Select to force the module to show data only for the time period you select. If you do not select a time period, the module uses the time period defined at the dashboard level, if one is configured. If a time period is not defined at the dashboard level, the module uses the default time period defined for the user's role.Important: The time slices in the column may return incomplete time periods under the following conditions:
- The start date of the time slice precedes the selected time period's start date.
- The end date of the time slice extends beyond the selected time period's end date.
For more information on how to create and set time periods, see Timeperiods.
- Reporting date
- Filters the module by the selected reporting date. Click Select to force the module to show data only for the date field you select. If you do not select a reporting date, the module uses the reporting date defined at the dashboard level, if one is configured. If a reporting date is not defined at the dashboard level, the module uses the default reporting date defined for the user's role.
- Data filter
- Optional Basic or Advanced Data filter that restricts the data displayed in this module, regardless of the filtering options configured at the dashboard level or in the Control panel. For more information, see Module-level data filters.
Visualization properties
These properties determine the visual presentation of the module, including which graphical visualizations are available to users.
- Effect Size Color Thresholds
- This option appears only when Display Topics/Themes By is set to Effect Size. Used to specify the color threshold for meaningful shifts associated with the Effect Size calculation and to explain score thresholds with labels. Add threshold ranges with the Add Range link, remove a range with the Remove
icon, or remove all ranges with the Clear all link.
- Low sample size threshold
- Indicates reports with samples below the specified number.
- Minimum sample size threshold
- Hides data when the sample size is below this number. The sample size is the number of results. For information about optimizing sample size, see Sample size methodology.Note: To ensure that the module displays only the results the user's role should see, enter a number greater than 0. When the Minimum Sample Size Threshold is 0, Experience Cloud displays all results.
- Number of decimal points to display
- Number of decimal places shown for numeric values.
This option accepts positive and negative integers, and zero. Specifying a positive value increases the number of digits displayed after the decimal point. For example, specifying 1 adds a number position ("tenths") after the decimal, so a score displays as 5.0.
Specifying a negative value for Number of Decimal Points to Display causes the displayed score to be rounded to the nearest order of magnitude indicated by the absolute value of the specified number.
For example, when Number of Decimal Points to Display is set to 1, a score displays as 83.3. But when the option is set to -1, that same score displays as 80, because a number position has been removed ("ones"). This same score displays as 100 when the option is set to -2, because 83.3 rounds to 100 when evaluated from the "hundreds" number position.
- Visualizations
-
Visualizations available to the user. If you add more than one visualization, users can toggle between them.
- Link to report
- Opens another report with more detailed data, filtered by the data visible for this module. Note: Destination reports inherit selected topic and theme values for individual topic and theme selectors only.
Click Select to add a default destination report. After adding a default destination report, in Link Target, select Full Report or Side Panel. Click Select in Default link overrides to add one or more different destination reports for specific roles. For example, you might want most roles to see a summary report, while providing a more detailed analytics report for the Insights role.
