Prepare for email masking
Tasks to complete before configuring email masking.
- Confirm that Email masking is appropriate for the company, and obtain approval from both Medallia and from the company.
- Identify the subdomain and email address to use for masking.Warning: To improve your host's DMARC reputation, use a domain other than the main company domain (such as, example.com) and do not share the subdomain with other services. For example, if feedback.example.com is already being used for survey feedback, do not also use it for email masking. Instead, create a separate subdomain such as invites.example.com. Sharing a subdomain makes it harder to identify issues, increases phishing risk, and complicates DMARC policy management. Consult with your Medallia expert before sharing domains.
Obtain Example The subdomain the company uses for email masking. feedback.example.com
The email address on the subdomain that receives replies. This will appear in the FromandReturn-Pathemail header fields.noreply@feedback.example.com Note: TheMessage-IDheader field is a globally unique identifier set by the system that created the email message. For Experience Cloud generated email, this value includes the actual email address of the Medallia email host, such as @express.medallia.com or @express.medallia.eu. When using email masking, theMessage-IDvalue is different from the From address that invitees see in their email client. This cannot be changed. However, this field is only visible when using tools or views that expose the email header. - Open a Medallia Support ticket and request Email masking. In Medallia Support, select Create a Case > Configure Application Settings > Email Masking (Experience Cloud).Support will prepare the Medallia hosts to enable the request. When finished, they will provide:
- The host names for the DKIM and DMARC servers.
- DNS CNAME (canonical name) record similar to these wrapped lines:
medallia1._domainkey.feedback.example.com 3600 IN CNAME medallia1.feedback.example.com.dkim.medallia.com medallia2._domainkey.feedback.example.com 3600 IN CNAME medallia2.feedback.example.com.dkim.medallia.comThese are the Medallia email hosts that will be responsible for maintaining the DKIM configuration for the company's masked emails. Use this information to Configure a company domain for email masking.
