Assessing comment volume

Comment volume is the number survey records with comments in your system. You will need to assess comment volume at these stages in the Medallia Text Analytics configuration process:
  • When evaluating whether the program has enough comments to enable Theme Explorer and Theme Investigator

Tip: The minimum number of comments required for themes is 5,000.
  • When evaluating whether the program has enough comments to generate valuable insights from rule-based topics
Tip: The minimum number of comments required for rule-based topics is 25,000 for B2B programs, and 50,000 for all other industries. For companies that do not meet the requirement, consider rolling out Theme Explorer and Theme Investigator only.
  • When estimating topic recall

  • Before initiating comment processing

To assess comment volume:

  1. Open the Responses report.

  2. Specify these filters:

    • For Time Period, select New Custom Time Period. Enter a start date 01/01/2004 (the earliest date you can specify). Set the end date to the current day, or a future date.

    • For Survey language, verify that you have added the appropriate language field to the Optionbox Settings screen. Choose the desired language.
Note: Often, a program has multiple language fields:
      • An E-Field that is populated by information in the invitation file

      • An A-Field (a_survey_language), which is the default system language field. This field is used by social data or when a customer selects a language when taking the survey.

Verify that you are referencing the correct language fields for this step.

    • For Custom Query, enter has_comment = 1 to filter out any survey responses that do not have a verbatim response. Survey responses that do have verbatim responses do not impact comment processing.
Tip: If has_comment = 1 does not work, see Filters and controls for information on configuring the a_has_comment field for the Custom Query filter.
    • For Feedback Type, select All Feedback. If you are measuring comments from social media comment only, select All Social Media instead.

In the following example, there are English survey records with one or more comments.

Make sure all filters are set properly before you click Run. In this example, 168,102 records match the requirements set by the filters.
