Q-fields
Reporting > Report Helpers > Fields > Q-Fields
Q-fields, or Feedback fields, are the building blocks of reports and surveys in that they collect information provided by individuals, including the answers to questions, and responses collected automatically either through observation, scraping, or import.
This Q-fields screen in Medallia Setup handles all the Q-fields in the company. You can also create Q-fields implicitly when creating a new question in surveys.
Properties
- Parent
-
Parent of this field, if any. A parent field is simply a container for grouping similar Q-fields. A parent is a Q-field whose Kind is Heading and which does not have an AltSet (set to None), and it is never used as a question or displayed on a report.
To create a parent Q-field:
- Click New.
- Provide a Keyname and Name.
- Set Kind to HEADING.
- Click Save.
To assign a Q-field to a parent:
- Create the child Q-field field and save it.
- Edit the child field and assign the Parent.
- Click Save.
- Keyname
-
Name that uniquely identifies the field; lowercase letters, numerals, and underscores only; must start with a letter, and has a maximum of 61 characters (63 after automatically prepending "q_"). The label should start with the company name to ensure uniqueness across multi-tenant instances. This cannot be changed once saved.
Note: Follow this naming convention: vertical + company abbreviation + keyname. The platform automatically prependsq_to the name. - Name
- Name of the field. This is the name that appears the editor, and in reports and filters. This value can be changed later, after the field has been saved. Restriction: Name can have a maximum of 63 characters.
- Short name
- Name that appears in drop-down filters. Usually this is the same as Name. When the filter is too wide because of the Q-field's name, use this field to provide a shorter name, such as Rate instead of Room Rate.
- Abbreviation
- Name that appears as the column heading in Response Investigator Filter view.
- In survey
- Question prompt that appears (by default) in surveys. Specific survey specifications can override the prompt on Surveys.
- In mobile survey
- Question prompt that appears (by default) in mobile surveys. Specific survey specifications can override the prompt on Surveys.
- With user text
- For Yes/No questions that include an Other text option, the value of this property replaces Other in the survey.
- Priority
- Order in which this appears in the Fields list; lower numbers towards the top, larger towards the bottom. If you omit this value, Experience Cloud automatically assigns a value 10 larger than the greatest value already in the list.
- Description
- Internal comments about this item. Best practice is to enter a description of the item, include the date it was added, who added it, and its intended use.
- Used for duplicate checking, ...
-
Whether or not to create an index for this column in the database. An index is required for Duplicate Checking, Cohort Tracking, Sampling Priority, Episode Conditions, and Quarantine Rules.
Warning: Most fields should not be indexed because indexes slow the import process. - Used for ACE
- Whether or not the Anti-cheating Engine uses this field.
- Support high cardinality auto-indexed...
-
Restriction: This feature is inactive by default. Ask your Medallia expert to file a Feature activation request with Medallia Support.Important: Enabling this property requires engineering approval.
Allows the number of values in auto-indexed text fields and lookup tables to exceed the system limit of 600,000 to a maximum of 2,000,000. Ranking reporting is limited to a subset of the field's values defined by report filters. If the cardinality in any single report is too high, an error message noting the limit is displayed instructing the user to add filters in order to show data.
- Other Question
-
Associates another question with this one. Usually set to None, except Other type questions which need to be associated with the
pr_other_textquestion.Note that in bulk edit you must leave this empty — Experience Cloud will not let you refer to another question until you've done the step of synchronizing the questions to this company. After you synchronize, this field’s filter will be filled with possible questions.
- Alternative Set
-
The type of data this field represents and which can be stored in this field.
-
Setup the Alternative Set before creating the field.
-
If the field answer will be selected from a fixed-set, the Alt-Set needs to be an ENUMERATED type.
-
When the result must be text, use the Text Alt-Set.
-
If the set needs to be sortable, it cannot be a Text data type.
-

- SFGs affected
