Text entry

Text entry element prompts the survey taker to answer a question in their own words. For example, you might ask survey takers to describe what they liked best about their experience, or ask them to suggest what might improve their experience.

Use Text entry content to allow survey takers to enter free-form text.

For more information, see Survey content.

In reports, you can display answers as a summary of verbatim comments from survey responses. For more information, see Comment Stream.

Text entry options

Answer type
Sets the kind of response to expect from the survey taker and validates it accordingly. Answer type can be:
  • Any text — Survey takers can enter free-form text.

  • Email address — Survey takers can only enter a valid email address. Email must match the pattern xxx@example.com.

  • Phone number — Survey takers can only enter a valid phone numbers. Phone must range between 5 and 15 digits, without considering in-between characters. For example, 19195554667, +1-919-555-4667, 1 (919) 555-4667, 1 919 555 4667.

Answer input size
Controls the size of the box into which survey takers will enter text. Answer input size can be:
  • Single line — Survey takers can enter one-line input.

  • Multi-line — Survey takers can enter a longer input.

Note: Single line uses Text as Data type (Content Kind) whereas Multi-line uses Translatable comment. Note that Text limits where you can include that field in Dashboards and it does not display data in Responses Feed.
For Text entry question created using a previous version of the configuration pane, the following options appear:
  • Content type — Previously Answer validation. Determines how the answer is stored in Experience Cloud database. Text is used for a one-line input, Comment for multi-line input, and Translatable comment when running machine translations on comment data

  • Text box width — Previously Answer Input Size. Options include Short text input, Long text input (for Text content type), and Short comment input, Long Comment input (for Comment and Translatable comment content type). Only when using v6 designs.

Enable Comment boost
Only for multi-line answer input size. Six customizable prompts to encourage survey takers to provide richer feedback, more information and clarity, thus resulting in actionable insights. Enter the prompt label and the number of characters (threshold) the survey taker must reach for the prompt to appear. In the example below, prompt labels include Tell us more, Please keep going, etc., and they appear when the survey taker reaches 1 and 80 characters, respectively. If Character limit is enabled, the last label number of characters must be equal or less to those set as character limit. For the other prompt labels, character limit is 17.
Restriction: Comment boost is not shared when reusing the Text entry question.

Tip: Comment boost labels do not support formatting using the visual editor, though they can be customized using CSS. See Comment boost colors for more details.
Enable Character limit
Limits the number of characters survey takers can enter. For example, if Character limit is set to 5, survey takers cannot write more than five characters in the text entry box. This limit can not exceed 10,000.
Note: Comment boost and Character limit automatically adapt their respective thresholds and limit to most languages based on how many characters are needed in the different languages to express the same message. A ratio is used to multiply the thresholds, taking English as base language. For example, the ratio between English and Chinese is 0.29 (29%), this means that Chinese needs less than a third of characters to say the same phrase.
Note: Text entry content can be translated in Translations. Comment boost default labels are part of the Shared text category category, which means that any change on the default labels impacts all surveys using those labels, whereas customized labels are part of Survey text category. You may reuse a translation if a label is used in a different Comment Boost of the same survey, but not for those on different surveys.
