Important: Language and translation management using Medallia Setup has been deprecated. The Locales, Languages, and Translations screens in Setup are no longer generally available. They are included in documentation for reference only.

Languages and translations are now managed from Translations in Medallia Admin Suite. For information about adding and editing languages, see Languages.

The Translations screen tracks the progress of your localization efforts, and is the primary screen for downloading and uploading translatable content. If you have multiple programs in place, use the Program dropdown at the top of the table to select which program's items are represented in the table. If a translatable item is shared by multiple programs (such as a Welcome message on a survey landing page), a change to that item affects all of the programs that use it.

Important: At least one program is required for translatable items to appear in this screen. For example, if you only have a Digital apps package installed, Experience Cloud is just used for reporting; however, you need to create a program as placeholder for Translation to display the items.

Source English group

The table includes an English group that includes several sections (such as Common Reporting 1, Survey and Questions, and so on), containing multiple translatable items. You define which items in the English group will be translated.

The source English group includes several categories of translatable strings.

Destination locale groups

Below the English group, translatable items are tracked in groups for each locale you have defined. For example, if you have defined locales for French and Spanish, your Translations table includes English, French, and Spanish groups. The sections in each destination-language group show the translation progress of the items in those sections.

Sections in each destination-language group show the translation progress of the items in those sections.

Translation sections

If you turned on the UseForSurvey property on the Locales screen, the following sections are available on the Translations screen for that locale:

  • Survey and Questions.
  • Alternatives.

If you turned on the UseForReporting property, the following sections are available for that locale:

  • Common Reporting 1.
  • Common Reporting 2.
  • Survey and Questions.
  • E-fields.
  • Unit/Unit Group Data Fields.
  • Alternatives.

If you mark an item for translation in a section of the English group, that group appears in each destination locale group. Click a group name in the English section to see the translatable items in that group. For example, if you click the Common Reporting 1 section the Translations screen updates to show all of the translatable items in that section.

Most sections include many translatable items, so Medallia Experience Cloud includes a floating box to the right of the table to help you navigate the list of items in that section. Use the search field in the floating box to filter the items displayed.

If you want to make an English-to-English translation for a row (such as to change the word unit to agent), turn off the Use Parent property for that row, enter your new English text, and then click Save. This turns the row green, and also removes the Use Parent property from the row. To get the property to appear again, remove all text from the row and then click Save.

For other items you want to translate, turn on the To Be Translated property, and then click Save.

Use the search field in the floating box to filter the items displayed.

When you open a section for a destination locale, the top of the screen shows the Overall Translation Completion status for that locale, with the following filter options:

  • To be translated — Click to show all items that have been marked for translation.
  • Remaining — Click to show items that do not yet have a translation.
  • Issues — Click to show items that have validation issues (errors or warnings). For example, if the In survey line of an alternative item is longer than 12 characters, you might receive a warning explaining that "Words longer than 12 characters might not be properly displayed in Survey Grids."

Below the status bar Experience Cloud lists the individual items in that section. You can enter translations manually for any item in that section by entering the translated text in the field to the right of the English string and then clicking Save Now. Below each translatable string is orange text to help you understand the context of that string, such as where the string appears, and includes field labels and field names when they are available. While you can enter translations manually, Medallia recommends that you manage translations using the export-import method.

Exporting and importing translations files

At the top of the main Translation screen, click Download Items To Translate to export a spreadsheet (XLSX file) that includes all items marked for translation. Use this file to collect translated content for each locale.

Warning: Do not modify the first 5 columns of the spreadsheet for any reason. They are used to identify translation strings upon re-import of the file. If you change these columns the import will fail.

If you want to modify or delete other columns or rows, you must first unprotect the spreadsheet. In Excel, open the Review tab of the ribbon and then click Unprotect Sheet.

When you are done collecting your translated content, click Choose File at the top of the main Translations screen to select and upload the file. For more information, see Localization.
Warning: If a item is uploaded with an unrecognized key, it is skipped in processing. If a file is uploaded where 100% of the keys aren't recognized, the processor will show the message 'Your file has no changes'.
