Topic rule generation

To be eligible for rule generation, a topic must appear in the Topic Hierarchy tab. Topic suggestions in the Topic Discovery tab are not eligible for rule generation; they must first be accepted by the admin and added as a draft to the Topic Hierarchy.
Topic drafts display a Topic Definition in the side panel, which includes editable description, example comments, and example keyword fields. Only the description field is required. Definition components guide the language model's rule generation and can be tailored to varying levels of specificity.
Smart Topic Builder uses topic definition components to identify common terms, synonyms, and semantically similar phrases that are highly indicative of the topic, then generates rules structured for both accuracy and performance, considering typical complexity of human-authored rules for similar topics.
Generally, more context is better. Include what the AI should focus on (for example, actionable topics for mobile banking) and, importantly, what it should ignore to ensure cleaner results. For more information, see Topic definition guidance and best practices.
Topic definition components can be inherited from topics generated with Topic Discovery, and edited or overridden manually by the admin, and they can be entered manually by the admin on new topics not generated by AI.
To generate topic rules and word groups, use the Generate Rules with AI button shown on an empty topic, or use the re-generate rules with AI banner link that appears on the side panel when a topic definition is updated. The following images show the button and the dialog that displays.

- Topic Description
- Required. Minimum length of 5 characters, maximum length of 5000. Describes the topic's purpose or goal to guide the language model's rule generation.

- Topic Should Capture
- Optional. Example comments, keywords, and phrases the language model should use for defining topic rules. The rules developed from these examples include matching comments in Text Analytics processing.
To use an existing word group in rule generation, specify the word group explicitly by name in the inclusion examples.
The maximum number of example comments is 10, with a minimum character length of 5 and a maximum length of 5000.
The maximum number of example keywords is 20, with a minimum character length of 2 and a maximum length of 100.
- Topic Should Not Capture
- Optional. Example comments, keywords, and phrases the language model should use for defining exclusion rules. The rules developed from these examples do not include matching comments in Text Analytics processing.

Smart Topic Builder generates word groups as needed while generating rules. AI-generated word groups have the same availability for other topics as manually created rules and can be viewed in the preview panel using the Word Groups dropdown option. AI-generated rules and word groups are marked with the generative AI icon. If AI-generated rules or word groups are edited by a human, the generative AI icon no longer displays.

To view and edit the Topic Definition with the preview panel, select the Topic Definition dropdown option. Use the Edit link to change definition parameters.
When a topic's definition changes, a banner displays with a link to re-generate rules with AI. Re-generating rules clears all existing topic rules and replaces them with rules that the language model generates from the edited definition.
