Cookie banner

Medallia offers cookie banners for surveys to inform users, provide options for consent, and comply with global laws.

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) mandates that websites in Europe disclose the cookies they use and allow visitors to select their preferences. Similar laws are being adopted globally. Medallia offers a customizable cookie banner for clients to use across their surveys. Survey participants must acknowledge the cookie banner to proceed with the survey.

Medallia offers two cookie banner versions:

Consent banner
The latest version, allowing survey takers to reject non-essential cookies such as the Anti-Cheating Engine (ACE) cookie.
Informational banner
An earlier version where all cookies are deemed essential. Transition to the consent banner is recommended.

In the informational banner, the ACE cookie is deemed essential, while in the consent banner, it is optional, allowing survey takers to opt out. Both banners require users to acknowledge cookie usage before proceeding with the survey.

ACE remains functional with the consent banner enabled. While ACE utilizes multiple rules, only one is affected by the rejection of user experience cookies. Learn more about ACE rules.

Follow these steps to enable the cookie banner in your surveys.

Important: This feature is available upon request. Ask your Medallia expert to file a Feature activation request with Medallia Support.
  1. When making your request, specify that you need the consent cookie banner and include URLs for both sandbox and production environments. Approval is required for new informational banner requests. Feature enablements are scheduled bi-weekly.
  2. Initially, the sandbox instance will be enabled for testing. The Product team will let you know when it has been activated.
  3. While in testing, prepare necessary translations, as not all cookie banner text has automatic translations.
  4. Once testing is complete, the Product team will confirm that the feature has been enabled in production.
  5. Post-enablement, the cookie banner will apply to all surveys within the instance. To display the banner on a specific survey, a new survey version must be created. Ensure all surveys are prepared for this to prevent unintended survey version creations. Once the new version is created, it is not possible to remove the cookie banner from a survey.

To activate the cookie banner for a survey, you can either create a new survey or update an existing one. Generate a test or live survey link to review the banner's content and functionality. Ensure translations are prepared for all required languages.

Important considerations

Once enabled, the cookie banner applies to all surveys within an instance and cannot be selectively applied to specific surveys or regions.

Creating a new survey version is necessary to activate the cookie banner. Ensure all surveys are ready for this change to avoid unintended survey versions.

Translations for the cookie banner are not automatically provided, so manual addition is necessary. You can customize the cookie banner text for each language in the Experience Cloud translation section. Note that default translations are not provided for non-English languages; if untranslated, the text defaults to English.

For a comprehensive list of cookies and their descriptions, see Cookie types. This includes Medallia Video and Tripadvisor cookies, which are only stored when enabled in surveys.
