Rating scale

Rating scale presents a range of progressive options — lowest to highest, smallest to largest — and let survey takers choose one option of the scale. As opposed to Grid, Rating scale only allows for one question, displayed as row, and a range of numerical options (scale). Commonly, the Rating scale question is the first question to ask survey takers, as it gives an overview of the overall experience you are measuring.

In this example, survey takers are asked to rate their likelihood to recommend Best Stores brand to a family or friend.

In reports, you can show the distribution of responses to each choice set item, displaying the percentage of responses for each option. For more information, see Segment Distribution Snapshot.

Note: In the background, this is enabled by MagicID set to SATISFACTION_RANGE in Alternative sets. This is required to use the field and to appear on the Search library.

Choice set (scale)

Choice set in Rating scale is represented by the option scale the survey taker can choose from. The scale can take different kind of visualizations, as well as display several ranges types and labels.

Visualization type

Scale options can be displayed in three different ways:
Numeric
The scale shows a range of numbers the survey taker must choose from.
Star
The scale shows stars instead of numbers for the survey taker to choose from. It is available for Range options starting on 1.
Radio button
The scale shows radio buttons the survey taker must choose from, but no numbers.

Range

It displays numeric and sequence numbers incremented by 1, using a 0 to 10 range by default. Choose from these available ranges:
0-10
Range goes from 0 to 10.
1-3
Range goes from 1 to 3.
1-5
Range goes from 1 to 5.
1-7
Range goes from 1 to 7.
1-10
Range goes from 1 to 10.
Custom
This lets you define your own range, starting from 0 or 1 up to 15.
Add N/A as a choice

Places a Not Applicable option at the end of the scale.

Restriction: Range does not allow for negative numbers and you cannot change its if the Choice set is being reused in other question element.

Labels

Labels are optional anchors added to the scale, making its meaning less ambiguous by placing these on the end points of the scale. Available labels include:
  • Not at all likely - Extremely likely.

  • Not at all satisfied - Extremely satisfied.

  • Do not agree at all - Completely agree.

  • Custom — This lets you define your own labels and the position you would like to place them. For example, when grading a experience using 'Excellent', 'Very good', 'Good', 'Poor', 'Bad'. Be aware of the phrasing on the anchors, as it affects responses.

Choice set (scale) options

This property customizes all the scale:
Display question text and scale side by side
Shows the Question text next to the Rating scale, on the left side.

Convert choice set (scale) values

Use the value mappings below to convert rating scales.

Note: The scale alignments shown in this table represent categorical NPS reporting mappings, not strict mathematical conversions.

A table mapping various numerical rating scales to Detractor, Passive, and Promoter categories. For the 0-10 scale, Detractors are 0 through 6, Passives are 7 and 8, and Promoters are 9 and 10. For the 1-10 scale, Detractors are 1 through 6, Passives are 7 and 8, and Promoters are 9 and 10. For the 1-7 scale, Detractors are 1 through 4, Passive is 5, and Promoters are 6 and 7. For the 1-5 scale, Detractors are 1 through 3, Passive is 4, and Promoter is 5. For the 1-3 scale, Detractor is 1, Passive is 2, and Promoter is 3.
