Blurring

Blurring distorts the video or image file to make the whole image unrecognizable. It is typically used to hide personally identifiable information (PII), to meet reporting requirements, or when customers are unable to secure respondent permission to use their media.

It is not possible to select and blur a specific part of the image.

Best practice is to acquire a respondent's permission to use media in advance of upload.

Creating blurred media

Blurring is a manual process; it is not possible to automate the selection process.

Tip: The blur selector opens over the media displayed in the Media Library. Before clicking Select Media, filter to a subset of media, such as by Media Source, Country or Language, to apply blur to that subset.
To select and blur individual media:
  1. On the Media Library screen, click More Actions and select Full Blur.

  2. Navigate through media and select each media item for blurring by clicking the media thumbnail. Selected media has a check mark.

Selecting media will not begin blur processing. Media will not blur until you click Save.

  3. Click Save to start blurring the selected media.

  4. Review the Full Blur Confirmation dialog.

    a. Click Confirm to process blurring.

    b. Click Cancel to return to blur selection.

Each media thumbnail image displays Processing... until blurring is complete.

To use Blur All:

  1. On the Media Library screen, click More Actions and select Full Blur.

  2. Click Blur All. This selects all video and image files.
  3. Depending on the type of blurring, review the Full Blur Confirmation modal.

    a. Click Confirm to process blurring.

    b. Click Cancel to return to blur selection.

Each media thumbnail image displays Processing... until blurring is complete.

The following video shows how to use Full blur.

Using blurred media

Blurred media is the default view of the media file. On the Media View page, Customer Admin, Channel Admin and Pro users can view the unblurred version of the media by clicking ICON Toggle blur on the media player's right side menu. Users can download both the blurred and original video or image file from the download menu.

Standard users can only view the blurred version of media.

There is no automatic process for reverting a blurred video or image to the original as the default view for all users. However, Customer Admin, Channel Admin and Pro users can download an unblurred version of the media and re-upload it to the channel.

Blurring media creates a Standard filter for each media file in Video. Use the Blurred Status filter to view Full or Not Blurred media in the Media Library.

Blur and showreels

Blur media prior to creating a clip or showreel. Each clip in a showreel has the blurring that has been applied in advance of making the clip.

Note: Showreels and clips cannot be processed for blurring. Full video and image files must be blurred in advance of making a clip for the showreel.

Blur and analytics

Blurring does not impact Facial Emotion Analytics and Object Recognition. These analyses take place as part of media ingest, before media is available for blurring in a channel.
