The survey editor contains elements to create different types of survey and is made up of the following components:

  1. Top bar — Contains the name of the survey and options to configure the form settings including the design for branding, open a preview, and save the survey.

Digital Web has options to select between pages and to add a page.

  2. Survey details pane — To create a survey, drag fields from the Add Field tab in the survey details panel to the canvas. Configure the different fields on the canvas using the options on the Field Settings tab. See Add Field tab and Field Settings tab for details.
  3. Canvas — Displays the current layout of the page. The fields on the canvas are inactive. Text on the canvas is automatically aligned based on the form default language.

A survey contains a minimum of one page. A page is a container of fields and design elements such as logos, images, and text. A Next button appears if a survey has more than one page.

The following sections describe the available tabs and options in the survey editor.

Required fields

When a field has the Required check box set, the survey cannot be successfully submitted until the field contains a value. Use this option for fields to ensure an option is chosen from a drop-down list and that the field cannot be blank. If the required field is empty and the submit button is clicked, an error is displayed under the required field, to help the respondee identify which field is required.

Digital uses a standard error message "Error: This Field is required" if a field is empty when the survey is submitted. This required field error message can be customized in various ways. For example, to modify the error message's text for all required fields in a survey, use the Override Form Validation Error Message options on the Form Settings Advanced tab. This configures the error message text for all required fields in the survey form. To change the design of the required field error, for example to use a different color, use custom CSS.

From version 2.53 you can optionally customize the descriptive error message text for each individual required field in a survey. Use the descriptive error message text to explain that the survey field is required. To customize the descriptive error message text at this level of granularity, use the following functionality. This feature is available upon request. Ask your Medallia expert to file a Feature activation request with Medallia Support.

The steps to customize each required field's error message text are similar to those used to localize a survey form. Review that process before proceeding.

  1. Based on the localization process, export the survey's fields into a localization file. Open the file in a suitable editor, such as Microsoft Excel.

  2. In the exported file are options for each required field in the survey titled "Descriptive error message".

Example of survey field in spreadsheet with descriptive error message text.

Modify the text in this row to set a unique error message for the survey field. If the row is empty then the descriptive error message text falls back to the default message.

  3. For each survey field that is set as required, add the descriptive error message text. Save the file and then in the Digital Command Center import the file back into the survey, using the languages table in a similar way to the localization process.

  4. Save the modified survey form. To verify the process worked, use the survey Preview and try to submit the survey without providing a value for a required field. The descriptive error message text is shown under the required fields.
